When Ilkley Literature Festival was launched 40 years ago its organisers could hardly have known just how successful it would go on to be.

These youngsters appear to be having a great time in this photograph taken in 1964 which comes from the Wharfedale Observer archives. The children look as though they may have been attending a party.

These thespians struck a pose for the cameras when they were performing in Aireborough back in 1958. Unfortunately no record survives of the name of the play they were staging, but the characters depicted are gondoliers and their wives.
