Bracken Ghyll Golf Club

Moving ahead with first pro and short game area

Founded in 1993 as just a nine-hole course built by a local farmer, Bracken Ghyll has come a very long way in a short time.

It is now an 18-hole course with outdoor practice facilities and two indoor nets for warming up if the weather outside proves to be a little inclement.

Bracken Ghyll also possesses a function room which can cater for up to 120 guests and a wood-panelled bar, the centrepiece of the club’s thriving social scene.

An example of its progression was the appointment, in March this year, of its first ever golf professional, Phil Bradley, who came from the Forest of Galtres club in York.

The club does not believe in standing still and has further plans in the pipeline, not least a small three-hole short game practice area.

Situated on the outskirts of Addingham, the course has some splendid views, not least of Beamsley Beacon, which can be capped with snow, and you also get a close-up view of the Chelker wind turbines, some of the earliest to be installed in the region.

For many leaving Bracken Ghyll, the 17th will stay longest in the memory. You have to hit the green as it is surrounded by woods, with a stream in front, and a stray shot to the elevated green means your card may be ruined.

Another hole which needs to be treated with respect is the fourth – a sharp dog-leg. Big-hitters may be tempted to go for the green, but a pond, wall, trees and heavy rough may make you more circumspect.
