Rothwell 0 Ilkley Town 2

Ilkley Town claimed another Premier Division scalp as they earned a place in the quarter-finals of the West Yorkshire League Cup on Saturday.

Goals by Adam Davey and Danny Henderson stunned the home side in a match where Town had the majority of possession yet still required goal- keeper James Hirst to make some important saves.

Knowing the game would present a significant physical challenge, Ilkley players made a determined start mindful that Rothwell’s prolific striker Liam Moore was capable of scoring goals at a higher level.

However, he was dealt with well by Darren Munday and Ben Dexter as Ilkley caused the home side problems with some neat passing football in the opening 30 minutes.

It was Davey who was providing the most threat for Ilkley, seeing one shot saved and another going over the bar.

Eventually, on the stroke of half-time, Ross Hutchison sent Davey clear and he deftly lobbed the ball over the advancing Jonathan Gardiner to give Ilkley a deserved lead.

Stung into action by that goal, Rothwell subjected Ilkley to an early and largely aerial bombardment.

A header by Moore was disallowed for offside and Jack Griffiths prodded wide from 15 yards.

Despite being pushed a little deeper by the direct approach of Rothwell, Ilkley continued to cause problems for the home side with James Winward and Sam Dexter springing attacks through Henderson and Joe Hendrie.

With Ilkley defending confidently and breaking with purpose, Rothwell became stretched at the back and another incisive attack saw Ilkley add a second goal after 70 minutes.

Goalscorer Davey found possession in the centre circle and played in Henderson behind his full-back.

Cutting inside and racing into the box Henderson blazed a rocket-shot past Gardiner and high into the net.

Rothwell threw caution to the wind in the final minutes as they pressed for a goal by pushing four players into the attack but Ilkley managed to hold out to earn an impressive victory.

Town return to league action on Saturday against Stanley United at Ben Rhydding (2.30pm).
