ILKLEY'S Swimming and Water Polo Club broke 29 records at their club championships earlier this month, and they celebrated that success in style at their annual awards and social night on Saturday.
Lucas Walton was crowned swimmer of the year while the water polo players' player of the year award went to Katharina Lubiecki. George Johnson was named as the coaches' player of the year.
Special awards were also handed out to both squads. Leo Stockley was given one for team spirit, Maddie Henderson and Alice Leggetter shared the overcoming adversity award, while Helena Coy picked up the long distance award.
Overall, the club has had a lot of success this year. More members than ever are entering galas, both local, such as the Rising Stars and Grassroots galas, as well as open meets organised further afield.
They have also had members competing in the Yorkshire championships, one of their most impressive results being George Wilde's bronze medal in the 50m backstroke.
Regarding the recent club championships, there were plenty of individual medals to be handed out. One was rewarded for every race in each age group and another for the best competitor in each year.
The winners were:
Aged nine: Jasmine Shay and Oliver Young
Aged 10: Lizzie Meredith and Sam Roberts
Aged 11: Eva Gray and Lewis Boyle
Aged 12: Charlotte Thorpe and Jasper Herring
Aged 13: Grace Cogan and Lucas Walton
Aged 14: Charlotte Wilkinson and Nathan Coy
Aged 15: Charlotte Gibbs and Charles Bechelet
Aged 16-17: Ellen Winters and Matthew Cogan
Aged 18-23: George Wilde
Aged 24+: Rachel McKay
Pentathlon awards, given to encourage members to compete in a variety of strokes in galas, were awarded to 26 juniors. To achieve this award they need to enter all four strokes, plus the individual medley, in a gala.
They were Rebecca Ashelford, Abigail Boggs, Lewis Boyle, Thomas Campbell, Grace Cogan, Nathan Coy, Angus Davies, Jiska Evans, Eva Gray, Ellen Johnson, Aidan Joyce, Jakub Marszewski, Elizabeth Meredith, Abbie Pearse, Lotty Philipson, Jessica Pitt, Jacob Rigarlsford, Lotti Ridgway, Sam Roberts, Beatrice Roberts, Leo Stockley, Angus Twigger, Lucas Walton, Jasmine Wilde, Charlotte Wilkinson, and Ellen Winters.
