Kate Nixon had a super Sunday at the National Table Tennis Championships in Preston.

Nixon won the girls cadet doubles with Kate Cheer after earlier losing to her partner in the singles final.

The talented 13-year-old Ilkley Grammar School pupil got off to a flying start in the singles competition.

She beat Jasmine Chan, Holly Johns and Alice Hazell in her group without the loss of a game.

She then demolished Rachel Scott 11-3, 11-5, 11-7 in the last 16 before meeting the fifth Seed Bhavika Mistry.

Nixon had too much power for her and won 11-6,11-5 11-8.

In the semis Kate came up against the promising Amy Blagborough and won a tight battle 13-11, 13-11, 11-6.

Cheer, who had come through some tough matches, beat Nixon 11-9, 11-7, 11-9.

After losing out, Nixon had to dust herself down and get ready for the doubles.

Cheer and Nixon beat Isabelle Joubeily and Jas- mine Chan before seeing off Grace Potter and Amy Blagbrough to reach the final.

In the final they faced the Middlesex pair of Denise Payet and Zahna Hall, Payet and Hall took a close first game 12-10 before Cheer and Nixon took the next 13-11.

Cheer and Nixon found themselves 8-2 in the decider but nine straight points won them the game 11-8 and the title.

It was a thrilling way for the pair to seal their victory after what had been a tremendous struggle between the two pairings.

To crown her day, Nixon also won the Mike Watts National award which is given to the most improved highest performing Junior player of the year.
