RHYS Morgan’s decision to make some tough selection calls paid off as Ilkley returned to winning ways at Huddersfield YMCA.

The head of rugby dropped two of the stars of last season’s North One East championship winning side.

Centre Steve Nolson and winger Paul Petchey lost their places in the starting line-up after the disappointing 17-13 defeat at Cleckheaton as Ed Brown and Declan Jackson were recalled.

Morgan also opted to move skipper Kimber to centre with Brown restored at stand off.

As his side prepared for this Saturday’s National League Three North home game with Wirral, Morgan said: “The decision to leave out Nolson and Petchey wasn’t taken lightly.

“They have been a big part of our success in the past couple of seasons, but as a coach you have to make tough choices.

“You lose credibility if you aren’t prepared to face up to such situations and act decisively.”

Winger Jackson marked his return with his first Ilkley try, while Kimber thrived at centre.

There was also another plus for the Dalesmen with the return of experienced forward Ollie Renton, who came on as a second half replacement.

Ilkley, who have now won four of their last five matches, know they face a tough test against second-placed Wirral.

“We were unlucky to lose 10-5 at their place,” said Morgan. “It is time we put on a performance for our own fans at Stacks Field.”
