Three of Ben Rhydding’s brightest young players were in action in the Futures Cup at Cannock Alastair Jordan, Harry Sherlock and Elliot Dowley all played for the Pennine Pumas under-18s – the North of England side – and helped them win a bronze medal in the divisional event.
Sherlock scored goals in both the 4-1 defeat by Mercia Lynx and 4-2 reverse against Saxon Tigers.
Jordan was on target in the 3-1 loss to Wessex Leopards before their team produced a fine performance on the final day to defeat a Saxon Tigers side packed with internationals, 3-0.
There was also a first for Ben Rhydding men’s first team and England under-18 coach Demy Dowley, who led the North under-16 girls to the region’s first gold medal.
This is also the first time that the North have won any of the age groups.
After drawing their first match 1-1 against Mercia Lynx they edged out Saxon Tigers 4-3.
In their final match against Wessex Leopards a 30- minute floodlight failure just added to the tension.
Dowley was able to keep the girls focussed and once the game resumed they added two further goals to win 3-1.
