Doncaster 1 Ben Rhydding 2

Ben Rhydding eased their relegation fears with their first Investec Ladies Conference North win of the season on Saturday.

Rhydding pressed high and put the Doncaster back line under constant pressure as they looked for an early goal.

This tactic paid dividends in the ninth minute when forward Rachel Doherty converted a penalty corner from a perfect pass by Jess Purvis.

Rhydding were in control of the game and looked to increase the advantage but penalty corner attempts from Rebecca Dallas and Kate Hesketh were both saved.

The visitors continued to pass the ball with pace and confidence. Full back Tanisha Janzen repeatedly finding space for an early ball up to the front line.

Rhydding went close to adding a second goal when forward Laura Smith intercepted a transfer ball in the Doncaster defence.

She slipped a pass through to Doherty at the top of the D for an early shot but it went inches wide.

Doncaster began to have more possession and mounted a few attacks, instigated by the experienced Charlotte Tomlin at the back.

The home side managed to sneak a goal from a tight angle between keeper and post on the stroke of half-time to equalise.

Jo Taylor and Helen Fisher were instrumental in creating some good build up play in wide areas before the game became a little feisty.

Rhydding were down to nine players and Doncaster to ten for a spell.

The home side pushed forward with their extra player, but excellent defending from Rachelle Le bourdon and Eleanor Trafford kept them at bay.

Doncaster created a few chances and a couple of penalty corners, but goalie Jo Carpay kept them out. Ben Rhydding eventually regained control with Jodie Bridger’s confident tack-ling and ball distribution proving crucial.

The visitors finally got their second goal from a slick move down the right instigated by Sarah Bell.

She found Doherty who drove down the back line and found Rebecca Dallas in space just in front of goal. Dallas turned quickly and fired the ball past the outstretched keeper into the back if the net.

Rhydding take on league leaders Wakefield away on Saturday. They managed a draw against them on the opening day of the season so they hope to get points again.
