Guiseley manager Steve Kittrick’s overwhelming emotion was disappointment after his team let a two-goal advantage slip in their first-round FA Cup tie at home to Barrow last Saturday.

“We could have been 4-1 up at half-time, and no-one would have argued,” said the Lions boss, “but we conceded two goals in five minutes due to our own errors.

“We could have had it wrapped up but lost the ball for the first goal by trying to play the ball out, while Mark Bower was unlucky for the second in that he slipped and headed the ball backwards instead of forwards.

“But we aren’t going to stop trying to play attractive football, and it was a great atmosphere. There were some new faces in the crowd and we hope they liked what tney saw and will come back.”

The replay at Barrow is next Tuesday but before that Guiseley have another cup tie – at home to Whitby Town on Saturday in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

“We will give them every respect,” said Kittrick. “The match means a lot to one of our directors, Gary Douglas, as he used to live there and he will take some awful stick if we lose!”

Guiseley warmed up for the initial FA Cup tie with a 3-1 midweek victory at Altrincham to reclaim second place in Blue Square Bet North.

“I don’t know whether it was our best performance of the season but it was a very pleasing performance,” admitted Kittrick.

He has also revealed that Andy Holdsworth was the only rival to Bower for the captaincy now that Simon Ainge has joined Luton.

He said: “Andy always gives 100 per cent in matches and it was between him and Mark Bower. It wasn’t just my decision. There was also the assistant coach and the physio involved too.”
