A PROPOSAL to turn a Menston Cottage into a 150-seat pub and restaurant has been turned down by planners.

Using delegated powers, a planning officer has thrown out the scheme to convert the building at 54 Main Street.

Chairman of the Keighley Area Planning Panel, Wharfedale Councillor Chris Greaves said it was turned down partly because of the effect of potential noise and disturbance to neighbours.

Officers also thought that the plan was not in keeping with the area and would cause traffic problems.

"It is not the right area for a business like that," said Councillor Greaves.

He said that it was a residential area close to a school which made it unsuitable for a restaurant.

The plan will also be discussed by the Licensing Committee at City Hall later this month. Despite the planners' decision Coun Greaves urged people to continue their objections.

Coun Greaves said: "We have won the battle we have got to go on and win war. People must not relax. I am delighted they refused planning permission we want it nailed this thing properly."

He said that there were already 15 objections the licensing committee. "The people of Menston have helped themselves by taking action and making objections," said Coun Greaves.

He added: "It shows you can make a difference if you try. I am really pleased." The licensing panel hearing for the application will take place at City Hall, Bradford, on Monday, February, 26.
