A SUCCESSFUL programme of summer activities organised by Ilkley Youth and Community Association (IYCA) was brought to an end with a community barbecue at the town’s Warehouse Youth Club.

Dozens of young people across the age range took part in 20 different sporting and dance events held around Ilkley throughout the school holidays.

It was the IYCA’s first extended programme of events to help keep youngsters occupied during the school summer holidays and was hailed a success by organisers, sponsors and participants alike.

“Most the sessions were well attended," said Councillor Martin Smith IYCA’s chairman. “This was our first year, and we’ve learned lessons for the future but we know from the feedback we’ve had from sponsors and participants alike that what we provided was appreciated.

“We must thank our sponsors and supporters who made it all possible."

All the sessions were free, with local companies and other bodies giving either cash or providing facilities or services free or at discounted rates.

Activities included sports afternoons at the Riverside Gardens run by JB Sports Coaching of Keighley, martial arts sessions from Kokoro Academy, of Dewsbury, tennis at Ilkley’s Lawn Tennis and Squash Club and climbing at Clip and Climb.

Booths Supermarket and Keighley’s 2nd Nature Cleaning gave generous support, along with Ilkley Parish Council, the Ilkley and Ilkley Wharfedale Rotary Clubs, Bradford Council’s Safer and Stronger Communities Fund and the Keighley Area Co-ordinator.
