THE life of teenager Tammas Slater constantly echoes with the sound of music.

During the week, he is a boarder at the famous Chetham’s School of Music, a hidden gem in the heart of Manchester. And on Sundays, the gifted 14-year-old carries out his duties as organ scholar at St Margaret’s Church in Ilkley.

Christopher Rathbone, director of music at St Margaret’s, said: “Tammas was already a prodigious piano virtuoso performer in the area, but since attending Chetham’s, he has been receiving organ tuition as well.

“He asked us if we could offer him experience as an organist, playing for services. We have pushed him in at the deep end by getting him to learn and play accompaniments, and he is thriving.”

Canon Philip Gray, vicar of St Margaret’s, added “We are thrilled to welcome Tammas as our first ever organ scholar.

"Two of our previous young organists have just begun new roles as organ scholars at Pembroke College in Cambridge and at Salisbury Cathedral. This seemed a natural way to develop Tammas’s amazing potential and talent and continue our vision to develop musicians for both today and the future.”

Besides his gift for the organ and piano, Tammas, who lives in Guiseley, has a talent for composing, which he discovered at the very early age of five. Recently part of one of his operas, based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, conducted by Nicholas Collon, was performed by the Aurora Orchestra at a Proms Extra Event at the Royal College of Music in August.
