A CHARITY day at Ilkley Rugby Club raised more than £8,800 which will be split between two charities - the charitable foundation of Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the Great North Air Ambulance.

The main sponsor of the event was JCT600 BMW who brought three cars to Stacks Field and ran a competition to see how many adults could fit inside a BMW series 3 - which was 13.

The money was raised through entry fees, members donating and a raffle. Sedbergh School, who travelled down to the event to support junior club member, 14-year-old Henry Ackroyd, of Ilkley, gave £800. Henry, who was at the charity day and walked on to the pitch with a match ball, suffered a cardiac arrest in January, as he took part in a cross country run at Sedbergh School, where he is a pupil. He was airlifted to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance.

The other charity was chosen in support of junior club member Freddie Morse, also 14, who has been having treatment for leukaemia in Leeds.

Ilkley Rugby Club chairman Richard Scargill said: “It was a fantastic day and the whole of the membership of the club got behind it and supported it.”
