THE Lord Mayor of Bradford has pledged to use his year in office to grant wishes for people across the district who "deserve a special treat."
Councillor Mike Gibbon's promise to do everything possible to help the most commendable cases has been announced alongside a new approach to fundraising for the Lord Mayor's charity appeal, which also fits with the Ilkley councillor's make it happen pledge.
Usually funds are raised for the Lord Mayor's nominated charity and this year half the money raised will be donated to the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford - but the rest will be used to support local groups or organisations which can bid for grants of up to £1,000.
The aim is to provide them with funding to advance the good work they do in society and applications will be accepted from those which support projects, activities or events from the whole district.
Cllr Gibbons (Con, Ilkley) said: "I have a long association with Marie Curie and, like most people, know people who have been affected by cancer. I hope you will join me in raising funds to support their vital work helping the families and friends of those battling this disease.
"I wanted to do something different with the fundraising for my civic year, so as well as helping Marie Curie with the work they do, I wanted to help lots of smaller local groups and organisations with their projects.
"As well as the fundraising aspect of my civic year, I wanted to be able to use my time as Lord Mayor to grant wishes for Bradford people who deserve a special treat.
"Your nominee could wish to travel along a canal on a barge; take to the stage and tread the boards at the Alhambra or possibly take part in the annual Festival of Remembrance. If I can make it happen I will give it my best shot!”
Those who know someone they think deserves a special wish to be granted, and think the Lord Mayor’s appeal team might be able help, are encouraged to get in touch.
