Ilkley Grammar school transformed some of its classrooms into an art gallery to display the Year 13 Art Exhibition.

The exhibition formed a part of the students’ assessments for their A level final grade.

The artistic content ranged from sketches to sculptures and beyond and touched on different subject matters and methods, showing a wide gamut of technical ability and creativity.

A level student Alice Vaughan exhibited her 1m x 1.5m acrylic on canvas picture of Lishman's butchers shop which she used as an illustrative backdrop for a stop motion claymation project celebrating the Tour de France Grand Depart through Yorkshire.

Alice said: "I originated my art project to publicise my home town of Ilkley as a visitor destination whilst coinciding with the Tour de France and the UK's fourth independent retail month.

"I chose to characterise the cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins and sculptured a clay model using an armature. I elected to paint Lishman's butcher shop as it reflects an iconic business uniquely based on the A65 Tour de France route and as an award winning butcher, master curer and one of Rick Steins food heroes, it was a gift."

Gillian James, headteacher said: “The level and quality of artistic work produced by our student never ceases to amaze me. The subjects they pick and the medium they choose to work in is so individual, and very powerfully demonstrates quality, talent and sheer hard work.”
