The future of important trees in Bramhope has been secured thanks to the confirmation of a tree preservation order.

Adel & Wharfedale ward councillors have welcomed the order, which covers four mature Maple, Horse Chestnut, Lime and Sycamore trees located at Hilton Grange, off Old Lane.

The council considers that the trees, which are located at the northern end of the estate, make a significant contribution to the local landscape and the preservation order means the trees are now protected from being felled or in any way modified without prior council consent.

Councillor Clive Fox (Conservative, Adel & Wharfedale), pictured, said: “These prominent trees were planted many years ago, well before the old Hilton Grange children’s residential school was converted to housing and their retention was seen as an important part of the overall conversion scheme at the time for the benefit of everyone living there.

“Their loss would have been a significant detriment to local amenity and I welcome the fact that they are now protected for the benefit of local residents, visitors to Hilton Grange and passers-by.”

Councillor Barry Anderson (Conservative, Adel & Wharfedale) said: “This is excellent news for local residents. These trees make a really positive impact on the local environment and it’s important that we ensure there are protections in place so that they are not damaged or cut down.”

Councillor Les Carter (Conservative, Adel & Wharfedale) added: “It is important that we protect and preserve as much of our local greenery as possible. This preservation order will give local people the reassurance that these trees are here to stay.”
