More than £10,000 has been raised in memory of two friends who both died of cancer.

Around 1,000 people attended a fun day in Horsforth in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The Macmillan Mash Up was staged in tribute to Shaun Turner, who died this year aged 43, and his friend Andy Forrest, who died five years ago at the age of 47. Both men were from Horsforth and were well known in the town.

Organiser Michelle Shaw had expected about 500 people to attend the event at the Horsforth Hotel – but more than twice that number turned up on the day.

She said: “The Mash Up was unbelievably successful. Macmillan are over the moon and are coming up on June 29 so we can present the cheque.

“As well as the Mash Up, there was a 27-mile bike ride, a sky dive, a zumba class and a golf day.

“This all happened in the month of May and in total we have raised more than £10,000. This is a huge achievement and we are all very proud to have raised so much money in memory of Shaun and Andy.”

Michelle, who is friends with Shaun’s partner Michelle and Andy’s daughter Natalie, described Shaun and Andy as great guys and unforgettable characters who had lost their lives too young to cancer.

She added: “Macmillan do a fabulous job and I wanted to do something that would raise a lot of money for them, and what better way to do that than get all the local people involved and have a charity fun day.”

Michelle thanked everyone for their generosity in donating to the charity, as well as the bands, the sponsors and the local businesses which had donated prizes. She also thanked the many helpers.
