Walkers who support a fairer deal for producers in developing countries will set foot in Wharfedale as part of a Bradford District Fair Trade Way walk.

A series of nine walks visiting official Fairtrade towns and villages around the district is already under way.

The scenic walks were devised by Fairtrade campaigners in response to the Fairtrade Foundation’s “Take a Step” challenge during the recent Fairtrade Fortnight A walk from Burley to Ilkley will take place on April 14.

Ilkley Fairtrade Group is offering three walk options on April 21, all of which set off at 9am from Christchurch, on The Grove.

A special guest will be Bruce Crowther, who was instrumental in starting the Fairtrade towns movement The shortest and flattest walk will head for Addingham along the River Wharfe. A warm welcome and home-made Fairtrade refreshments await mid-morning at St Peter’s Church, Addingham, an official Fairtrade church.

The other walk options go via Ilkley Moor and drop down to Keighley via Riddlesden. A soup lunch will be provided by Fairtrade supporters in Keighley.

Walkers can choose to return home at this point or continue to Haworth.

As time will be short and Haworth Fairtrade group is laying on a special welcome, walkers will continue to Haworth by train rather than on foot along the Fair Trade Way.

Ilkley’s Walkers are Welcome Group came up with the Fair Trade Way walk from Ilkley to Keighley.

Ilkley became the 17th Walkers are Welcome Town in the country in 2009, and members promote a wide range of walks in the area.

In addition to producing a booklet, the group has led a variety of walks including some with the Ilkley Civic Society and the South Pennines Walking Festival.

An evening walk to Middleton and Calvary is being led by the group this year, as well as a walk for the 2012 South Pennines Walking Festival. Further details from the Ilkley tourism website or Ilkley Visitor Information Centre.
