Campaigners fighting plans to build almost 300 homes in a Wharfedale village will find out next week if their battle has been successful.

Yesterday, Bradford Council confirmed a planning meeting to discuss the fate of the proposed houses in Menston will be decided in the village.

In July, a Shipley area planning panel meeting, due to be held at City Hall in Bradford, was postponed just days before because developers made alterations to their plans.

Now, councillors will meet at the Kirklands Community Centre, in Menston, at 10am next Tuesday to discuss applications by Barratt Homes and Taylor Wimpey.

Barratt Homes wants to build 174 homes at Derry Hill and Taylor Wimpey aims to construct up to 124 homes at Bingley Road despite massive local opposition.

Earlier this month more than 350 people turned out at a public meeting at the Kirklands centre to discuss their latest battle plans and amendments to the application.

But they have already signalled their intention to lobby the council for a postponement of the new date, claiming there has not been enough time to take stock of all comments about the changes to the applications.

Graham Booth, chairman of the Menston Action Group (MAG), which was set up to fight the home applications, said he believes council officers will back the plans for approval, as they did earlier in the year.

“We’re just not convinced the officers have had enough time to make reference to the 62 amendments to the plans,” he said.

“We believe, essentially, the bodies of the reports will be the same. We’re planning for the meeting next Tuesday, but something could happen between now and then.”

Mr Booth said MAG would be sending members to a meeting of the planning panel in Bingley on Friday to see if they can learn anything from a decision on the Sty Lane application.

Councillors on the panel will decide whether developers Redrow and Bellway can build a 400-home housing estate in Sty Lane, Micklethwaite, next to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, during a meeting in Bingley Arts Centre.
