Visitors attempting to navigate their way around Wharfedale may have found themselves off course recently if they followed the signs.

Ilkley resident Brian Sweet contacted Wharfedale Newspapers when he caught sight of a bus stop on Skipton Road in Ilkley, which indicated that passengers could catch a bus to the non-existent village of “Addington” (rather than “Addingham”), as well as the more familiar Keighley, Skipton and Airedale General Hospital.

Meanwhile in Otley, all roads lead to Skipton, according to a new road sign which went up in Leeds Road recently.

Photographer Christopher Winpenny saw workmen replacing the sign on the approach to the roundabout heading out of town towards Leeds. As well as directing motorists bound for Skipton back down the Otley bypass, it also indicated they could follow the A660 road ahead, towards Leeds and Leeds-Bradford Airport, to get to Skipton.

A Leeds City Council spokesman said someone was being sent out to check the sign this week and make changes. She said a contractor was called in to put up the new sign because of changing rules on illuminated and reflective road signs.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Metro, said the organisation had not been made aware of the error, and was sending someone to change the name on the bus stop – one of around 14,000 in West Yorkshire.
