Visitors to this year’s Otley Carnival will be able to talk to a lifesaving Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew.

One of the charity’s helicopters will be landing near the Bridge End showground field on Saturday, June 18, so the pilot and paramedics can chat to carnival-goers about their work.

Preparations for the 2011 event, meanwhile, are gathering pace, and the organisers are keen to attract as many parade floats and walking tableaux, along with stalls and attractions, as possible.

Press officer Geoff Wright said: “The carnival day is only seven weeks away from Saturday, and many people are involved in preparations for another great day for residents and visitors, especially the children.

“Every year the success of the day depends on the help and support of many people from Otley and the surrounding communities.

“Most local schools entered last year, as did many local charities, youth or community groups and businesses. Entering the parade is a very good opportunity for businesses or organisations to advertise, and we will be delighted to accept entries from anyone or anything which is decorated, and not necessarily local.

“So far, some 13 floats or tableaux have entered, together with ten bands and several vehicles, but we would like many more!

“Many organisations also set up a stall or other activity at the showground field to raise funds for their cause or business.

“An exciting feature this year will be the presence of one of the two air ambulances run by Yorkshire Air Ambulance, who are one of the beneficiaries – the other is Otley Science Festival – of this year’s carnival.

“Depending on operational requirements, their helicopter will arrive in the early afternoon, landing in the field next to the showground, and the crew and support staff will be available to talk to visitors.”

Anyone wishing to enter a float or tableau should contact Diana Allen on (01943) 462498, while June Galling (01943 467549) can provide more details about holding a stall, slideshow or other attraction.

Carnival programmes will be available from May from several outlets around town.

The parade, which always starts off proceedings, will set off from Wharfedale Farmers Auction Mart at midday, led by the Town Bellman and the Carnival Queen elect and her attendants.
