Howden Clough 0 Otley Town 5

There was to be no giant killing act for Second Division Howden Clough in this much-postponed West Yorkshire League Cup tie against in-form Otley Town.

Howden Clough were only in the game for the first 15 minutes, which was about the time it took for the Otley players to get used to the bumpy playing surface.

Luke Danskin opened the scoring in the 18th minute when he cleverly broke through the home defence to score with a powerful right-foot shot He doubled his tally five minutes later when he was first to react to a 30-yard shot from Tom Chadwick which came back off the bar.

Almost from the kick-off, the Otley players had worked out that Clough were holding a risky high and square defensive line and Josh Waite took full advantage of this when he ran on to a finely-weighted through pass and shot past a despairing home keeper. Last season Andy Crowther was a Howden Clough player and he did his old team mates no favours at all when he scored with a floating shot which he later admitted was a cross caught by the wind.

With a half-time 4-0 score-line the game was all but over but credit to Howden Clough – they never once gave up and played with great spirit despite their hopeless situation.

Unfortunately there was a massive gulf between the two teams and Otley Town – with the Jimmy Davey outstanding at the back – were in no mood to relax their grip on things.

In fact they redoubled their efforts in the second half and had it not been for good goalkeeping and woeful finishing could easily have made it into double figures.

Danskin scored the only goal of the half to complete an admirable and well deserved hat-trick.

The draw may have been kind to Otley in the first round but they have had no such luck in round two.

This Saturday they must travel to unbeaten Premier League leaders Bardsey for what promises to be a terrific game.
