A teenager who died in a tragic accident has given the gift of life to 11 others.

Organ donor Joel Scott, 19, of Guiseley, died falling from a ‘bombing’ rock while jumping into the River Wharfe at Burnsall.

He had been enjoying the sunshine with a friend, Ben Lee, when he slipped climbing back out of the water.

Joel suffered serious head and back injuries in the fall and died after being airlifted to hospital.

Now, as his devastated family prepares for his funeral, his uncle, Phil Jackson, has told how Joel’s organs have been used to save the lives of 11 people.

He said: “Joel always carried a donor card and it’s thanks to that that he has helped save so many other lives. For someone of his age to think that far ahead I think is exceptional.

“It’s typical of Joel who was a very loving and caring lad. He has sadly gone but other people are living because of him. I think he’s incredible.”

Joel had been seen ‘tombstoning’ into the River Wharfe, before the accident happened last Friday, jumping 25ft from rocks into the water.

North Yorkshire Police said he fell as he climbed back up the rocks.

His friend Ben shouted for help and held him until police arrived. They called the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Team who waded into the river to get to him so he could be transferred to hospital.

Mr Jackson said: “When we heard the news about what happened we were devastated. We rushed to the hospital to be by his side but nothing could be done.

“We are a very close family and Joel was at the heart of it. It was just a tragic accident and unfortunately it cost him his life.”

Joel’s funeral will take place at Rawdon Crematorium on Monday at 1pm.
