Talented schoolboy Callum Worts hopes to follow in the footsteps of golfing legend Colin Montgomerie after being awarded a scholarship to his former school.

Callum, seven, beat off the competition to become the first pupil to receive the scholarship put up by the European Ryder Cup captain, which will see him take up a paid-for place at Ghyll Royd School in Burley-in-Wharfedale for the next four years. In addition, he will receive free golf coaching at Ilkley Golf Club.

Irene Connor, head teacher at the boys’ preparatory school, said: “We are delighted that Colin has supported the school by offering the scholarship. I am delighted that we have been able to offer this award to Callum.

“Callum demonstrates tremendous potential academically and in the sporting arena and will be a great addition to the school.”

The school started the scholarship earlier this year in honour of Montgomerie, who went on to become one of the most successful golfers Britain has produced. He attended Ghyll Royd for four years while his parents were living in Ilkley.

He learned to play golf at Ilkley Golf Club and holds the course record of 64.

The scholarship was open to boys throughout the area who were asked to sit an entrance exam and complete a sports assessment with Ghyll Royd coaches and Andrew Driver, the golf professional at Ilkley Golf Club.

The boys played in the cricket nets in the sports hall and demonstrated their skills in basketball, tennis, rugby and football before ending the day with a swimming session.

Callum, who attends Bur-ley Woodhead Primary School, already plays tennis and hockey and was recently scouted for Leeds United FC after playing for the Burley Trojans. His mum Sally, 40, said: “We are so proud of Callum for what he has achieved. He absolutely loves sport and has always been very good with a ball.”
