THE award-winning Spanish family drama Alcarras is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, October 29th (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

Set in the real town of the same name in Catalonia, and with a non-professional cast of Catalan-speaking actors, Alcarras tells the story of an extended family who spend every summer harvesting peaches in the orchard they rent from the local landowner, a way of life that has continued uninterrupted for generations. When the landowner dies his heirs calculate that it would be more profitable to eradicate the orchard, cover the land with solar panels and sell the generated electricity.

With her second feature (her first, Summer 1993, was screened by the Society in 2019) director Carla Simon has created an elegy for a disappearing way of life, and Alcarras won the Golden Bear award for Best Film at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival last year.

The Society's AGM, which was scheduled in its brochure to precede the screening, has been postponed until the new year.

Non-members are welcome as guests (£5) but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to guarantee admission. To comply with the film's certificate no guests under 15 can be admitted.
