A NEW Friends of Norwood scheme has been launched during an open day at the chapel and retreat centre.

More than 120 people braved atrocious weather to attend the open day and service to celebrate the 93rd anniversary of Norwood Chapel.

A spokesman said the chapel was full to capacity and added: “Those attending were able to see the new developments that have recently taken place and also the vision for the future at the chapel and retreat centre. The anniversary service was led by the Rev Philip MacDonald who was the minister at Burley in Wharfedale and with responsibility for Norwood when the Retreat Centre was created 23 years ago.”

“In the Centre, over the last few months, the kitchen has been enlarged, the toilet facilities have been made disabled friendly and the pews have been removed and replaced with much more comfortable seating which also has enabled the building to become much more flexible for visiting groups.

“There are, however, further items that need to be completed including redecorating and new carpets for the area where the pews have been removed from plus also equipment for the centre. Regarding the latter, this includes items for the kitchen costing £365, technical and audio equipment for visiting groups to use costing £1500, worship items totalling £200, and various storage units costing £900.”

To donate send a payment to The Circuit Treasurer c/o Otley Methodist Church, Walkergate, Otley with cheques payable to Wharfedale & Aireborough Methodist Circuit.

Volunteers are also being sought to join the newly-formed Friends of Norwood group, which is being described as critical to achieving a sound financial basis for the future of the chapel and centre.

A spokesman said: “The Friends of Norwood are a group of people who love and care for the work and ministry of Norwood Retreat Centre and are prepared to give voluntary support on a regular or occasional basis.”

Practical work to be carried out by the group could include cleaning, gardening, maintenance, organising fundraising activities, helping with bookings, acting as stewards at events and giving financial support.
