YOUNG linguists from Otley are celebrating success at a national Chinese language contest.

Kathryn Dawes and William Hallidie Smith competed in the UKAPCE National Mandarin Reading Competition in Manchester - and came first in their category.

The Prince Henry's Grammar School students took part in the Non-native Chinese Speakers group, which they had prepared for with Chinese teacher Miffy Loxton.

Fourteen schools, including specialist Chinese schools, were involved with the judges giving a score to each student based on the content of their reading, pronunciation, tone and performance.

They praised Kathryn and William's performances, along with the quality of the material they had chosen to study - and Prince Henry's also came away with the certificate for excellence in teaching Chinese.

Faculty Leader in Modern Foreign Languages at Prince Henry’s, Jo Barber, said: "We are very proud of the students - they have done brilliantly.

"Having had their interest sparked by our Mandarin Chinese course in Year 8, they have worked very hard in their extra-curricular Chinese club and look at the results.

"Fantastic!"

Mandarin is one of the many languages offered at the school, where all students study Spanish or French to GCSE level.
