VOLUNTEERS braved the cold to carry out improvements to Rawdon Garden of Remembrance.

Rawdon in Bloom volunteers and Leeds City Council staff joined forces to clear and tidy the overgrown garden at the corner of Micklefield Road and Leeds Road. Improvements include planting up a fernery on the large rockery to the rear of the garden after adding top soil.

Rawdon in Bloom Vice chairman Phil Gomersall said: "It was organised for the top soil to be delivered bright and early and were ready and waiting at 7am. It was bitter cold for April. Unfortunately the soil didn’t arrive so we were left standing about shivering; it was no joke, so we all retired to the local café for coffee whilst the delivery error was sorted out.

"When it finally arrived with six wheel barrows and eight volunteers the pile of soil was soon shifted.

What a difference it made to the look of the garden, it was greatly enhanced.

"There are still further improvements to be made so more voluntary sessions will be needed. What a difference RIB are making to our environment, and there are more schemes ahead."
