BILL Cassell sang his favourite Gilbert and Sullivan song at his 100th birthday celebrations on Tuesday.

He sang Love Makes the World Go Round' from the opera Iolanthe with the Burley-in-Wharfedale Probus Choir, who then went on to sing four more songs for him.

Mr Cassell, of Grangefield Avenue, has been singing as a tenor in the Burley-in-Wharfedale Probus Male Voice Choir since 1990 and has no intention of retiring.

In honour of his 100th birthday, the Lord Mayor of Bradford Robin Owens presented him with a crystal tulip bowl engraved with the City of Bradford coat-of-arms.

There were 130 guests who made a champagne toast to Mr Cassell, including the Lord Mayors wife, Lady Mayoress Janet Owens.

Mr Cassell's daughter, stepdaughter and step-granddaughter were also in attendance as guests of honour at the party in Burley's Queen's Hall.

advertisementSpokesman for the choir Norman Phillips said: "It all went very, very well. Bill made a witty speech, saying he had done nothing in particular but had done it very well.

"The Lord Mayor congratulated Bill on his 100 years. He said he had met quite a few people of Bill's age but Bill was one of the brightest and that was obviously because he keeps his mind active."

Mr Cassell also attended a party given in his honour by the Burley Community Luncheon Club the next day, Wednesday July 4, in Queen's Hall. Member Sue Whelan baked a cake and music was performed on keyboard and guitar.
