Fond farewell tea party to 'the hut' in Ben Rhydding
Ben Rhydding Scout and Guide Group hosted a ‘Farewell to the Hut’ afternoon tea as it was revealed building work on a new headquarters will begin within weeks.
Ilkley’s longest-serving guide leader Pam Clarke MBE and a team of helpers worked tirelessly to make the event possible.
It proved to be a great success as over 100 people enjoyed tea, scones, sandwiches and cake.
A delighted Pam, who started her guiding career in 1934 as a Brownie, said: “It was lovely to see so many folk turn out to say a fond farewell to hut. It holds so many happy memories for many local people.
“I wanted to take the opportunity to say a big thank you to all those who attended and also to the team that have worked so hard to make this event such a success.
“We have managed to raise over £1,000 this afternoon which is fantastic!”
The group plan to start re-building their crumbling headquarters in Wheatley Lane in a matter of weeks. The project has been a long-held dream and a massive £330,000 fundraising drive has been underway to make this dream a reality.
“We are entering a final push of fundraising so we can get started on the project without the group having to go heavily in to debt,” added Pam.
“We have been successful with various generous grants from organisations like Wren, Ilkley Round Table and the Garfield Weston Trust.
“We have also been delighted by many kind donations from individuals both recently and in the past. I am really excited that this long-held dream is finally becoming a reality.
“In few months’ time we should have a facility that will benefit our young people and prove a great resource for the wider community.”
