A young singer songwriter has recorded her hard-hitting song about the 2011 London riots after impressing classmates and teachers with her composition.

Ilkley Grammar School student, Rhiannon Forbes-Wake, was among Year 10 students asked to produce a presentation, speech, or poem about the riots, which originated in Tottenham following the shooting of Mark Duggan.

Rhiannon decided to write a song from the viewpoint of Mark Duggan as he lay dying after being shot. She performed Shoot Me Down in school this month.

She says the song is neither political nor controversial and could be attributed to anyone unlucky enough to be fatally shot.

The school’s creative arts department tweeted on social networking website Twitter, and a teacher asked for a copy of her song.

Rather than record it on her iPad at home, her family decided to record it properly and contacted a friend in the music business.

Rhiannon has written more than 90 songs, and has since returned to the studio to record a further two songs.

She will perform her song at the Ilkley Grammar School creative arts evening on Wednesday.
