During building work to create new classrooms at an Ilkley primary school, children were excited to find a time capsule buried by a previous generation.

A special assembly was held at Ashlands Primary School in Leeds Road to go through the contents of the time capsule.

The children saw work from pupils who were at the school 18 years ago, who had also buried a variety of labels and packets from foods and drinks of the time.

The school log book also made interesting reading, especially for some members of staff who worked at Ashlands in 1995. Head teacher Andrew Soutar said the discovery had inspired the school to bury a new time capsule for future generations to discover. The time capsule, created by Harry Whitaker from Spooners Engineering, was buried on Thursday morning.

Mr Soutar said the contents captured some of the work done in school. “We want to share with whoever uncovers it something of what life is like in 2013,” he said. “Each class has made a contribution which includes photos, written work and work saved on USB memory drives.

“We also included the contents of the time capsule which had been dug up.”

The 1995 time capsule was discovered by builders Bermar Construction Ltd, the contractor who is creating new classrooms for Ashlands Primary School as it increases from 1.5 form to two form entry. The £1.5million project will see four new classrooms created, an extension to the playground and a remodelled entrance to the school. The work is being funded by Bradford Council as part of its expansion programme to provide places for all the children in the district.
