The combined efforts of two Rotary clubs and a donation from the Ilkley Rotary Inner Wheel Club raised over £2,000 to help the survivors of the disaster in the Philippines.

Rotary Club of Ilkley and the Rotary club of Ilkley Wharfedale raised the total with the generous help of the Ilkley public, with a town centre collection on Saturday.

The money will be used to sent Shelter Boxes to the Philippines ShelterBoxes provide emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters, at the time when they need it the most.

Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in the Philippines are now homeless and without clean water or food in the wake of super typhoon Haiyan. Their situation is desperate.

ShelterBox has teams in the Philippines responding to the disaster and we are moving emergency shelter and other vital aid already located in the Philippines and neighbouring countries to the worst affected areas Each strong box contains a tent for up to ten people, with emergency equipment, including bedding, cooking equipment and stove, water purification equipment, waterproof clothing and many other items including tools, which make life sustainable in a desperate emergency The ShelterBox Response Team have now deployed boxes locally to regions around Ilagan. The team has further assessed the need for shelter around the regions of Maconacon, Divilacan and Palanan.

A Rotarian who is currently helping with the relief effort, said: “A woman and her six children were living in a collapsed roof. With no husband to help her rebuild she was living in a space smaller than a cupboard, exposed to the elements. I like to think I’m hardened but sometimes it really gets you.

“She’s now in a ShelterBox disaster relief tent thanks to all our donors.”
