A colourful Tudor rose-style design has landed first prize in this year’s Ilkley Carnival painting competition.

Eleven-year-old Marisa Allen, from Westville House School, was chosen by the judges to be the winner out of more than 150 entries from schools across Ilkley. Her picture will now adorn the front cover of this year's carnival programme.

Other winners included Lydia Robson, eight, also from Westville House, who won first prize in the Year 3-4 category and Oliver Johnson, seven, from the Ben Rhydding Primary School, who claimed the Year 1-2 category.

Special mentions also go to Charlotte Cole, six, from Moorfield School and Danny Leach, 11, from Ben Rhydding Primary who were also highly commended by the judging panel.

Ilkley Carnival Committee chairman Andrew Stacey said he was delighted with the quality of all the paintings and particularly impressed with the winning entry.

“Marisa's painting is the perfect image to represent many years of British history,” he said.

“The attention to detail and intricate colours of the painting meant that there could only really be one overall winner – it was simply beautiful.”

The three winners will get their pictures framed by the Weaverbird Workshop, in Ilkley, and they will receive Bettys goodie bags and certificates, along with Charlotte and Danny, who were highly commended by the judges.

All children will receive their prizes on the carnival stage on Monday, May 6.

Tickets for the carnival have now gone on sale online and more details are available on the Ilkley Carnival website, ilkleycarnival.org.
