THIS FABULOUS historic photograph from the Ilkley Gazette archives is a fascinating record of the British Empire.

Sadly there are no details of when and where the picture was taken or of how the men in it were connected to Ilkley.

The second photograph shows a visit to JB Battye & Co, Yeadon in 1957 by Alderman Joe Hiley JP who was at that time Lord Mayor of Leeds.

It shows staff at Battye's along with Mr and Mrs Hiley and comes from the archives of the Aireborough Historical Society.

The picture sparked memories when it was published on the society's Facebook page - with one woman writing to say she had spotted her father and grandfather in the snap.

She said: "What a lovely surprise to see my dad as a young man, he passed nearly forty years ago aged 50."
