Pupils and staff at a Burley-in-Wharfedale school put on their pyjamas to support a children’s charity.

Members of Ghyll Royd School dressed up in their night clothes to enjoy a tasty fundraising breakfast in aid of Rays of Sunshine, which grants wishes for seriously ill youngsters. The event was one of a series of events at the school as part of the charity’s awareness week. Children sold cakes, raffle tickets, homemade chocolate sauce, wrist bands and badges to raise more than £900.

They were visited by Rays of Sunshine special ambassador Alice Halstead, of Embsay, who was granted a wish after being hospitalised for months by a rare form of diabetes.

Alice, whose sister Laura runs the nursery at the school, said she was delighted to have the chance to talk to pupils during assembly.

“The children were extremely receptive and enthusiastic,” she said.

“I asked the children to think of what they would wish for and they replied with some imaginative wishes – from flying in a rocket, singing with Hannah Montana, going in a submarine, and seeing themselves in a video game to their family turning famous.”
