Ilkley’s Kyle Brassington made his second successful return to his home town in three weeks last Saturday.

Just 21 days after winning the club’s men’s singles closed title, the 23-year-old added the JM Glendinning Group Ilkley Open crown, which was part of the AEGON British Tour.

Damp grass courts forced the final indoors at the weekend and the top seed defeated second-seeded Simon Roberts (Lancashire) 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.

World No 1159 Brassington should have saved himself his third-set exertions in what was a fine contest as he served for the second set at 5-4, where he had a match point.

He also had two break points in the following game which, if he had taken one, would have again left him serving for the match.

But Bolton-based coach Roberts is a fine competitor and called on all his defensive qualities, not the least with some well-judged lobs, to extend the match to the full distance.

Brassington, who missed an easy forehand on match point, said: “I really should have won it in two sets but Simon played well.

“I had a dodgy five minutes but I knew that if I served well I always had a chance.”

Brassington had the heavier game – his first serve when hit hard very rarely came back – and was prepared to take more risks but made the mistake of rather gifting Roberts his last two service games in the second set and therefore relying on winning his own serve when he led 5-4.

However, having changed his shirt at the start of the final set, the Yorkshireman recovered his composure well.

Even so, Brassington had to save a break point at 4-4 before clinching the contest on his third set point.

Roberts, 27, said: “The last three times I have played Kyle it has gone to three sets, and I have won the last two before this.”

Ilkley’s James Ickringill – son of former Yorkshire champion Simon – lost the men’s doubles final 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 with his Stirling Uni-versity team-mate Joe Gill to Sun-derland duo Adam Barratclough and Jonathan Binding.

But Bingley’s Gavin Davison defeated Binding 6-4, 6-3 in the boys’ under-18 singles final.

Natasha Hillyer, who helped Warwickshire to promotion from Group Two of Women’s County Week the previous week, stayed on in Ilkley to win the British Tour women’s singles title. The 21-year-old from Coventry defeated Cheshire’s unseeded Amanda Murray 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Ilkley member Andy Hutchinson made a winning return to his club’s open tournament – after a gap of 22 years.

The 46-year-old former York-shire player won the men’s 45 and over singles title.

Bradley-based dentist Hutchin-son, who beat Roundhay’s Ashley Cope 6-2, 6-0 in the final, ex-plained: “I needed some practice before playing for Yorkshire ’s 35 and over team.

“But my preparation has been limited because I have just cycled, along with three other men from Bradley, from John O’Groats to Land’s End for four charities.”

Hutchinson was lucky in another sense, however. In his quarter-final, he was 6-3, 5-3 and match point down against Jens Sowa when the coach retired as he had to return to Germany the following day.

“He played well and his strokes were grooved,” said Hutchinson, “but it was only my second match back and I was very rusty.

“If I had had the chance to play more before the tournament it would have been a lot closer.”

Home club members Richard Bourdon and Colin Campbell added the 55 and over men’s doubles title to the club crown they won last month.
