GUISELEY'S joint-manager Marcus Bignot is feeling ambitious ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup clash at Peterborough Sports, saying that he hopes his side can do even better than last year’s memorable run.

In 2018/19, they beat Staveley Miners Welfare, Cleethorpes Town and Stourbridge in the qualifying rounds, before catapulting themselves into the national conscience with a thrilling 4-3 win over Cambridge United in the First Round.

They fell at the next hurdle, but gave League One outfit Fleetwood Town a real fright before losing 2-1.

Bignot said his players have to focus on getting past Peterborough in the Third Qualifying Round on Saturday first but could not deny how exciting it would be to see a repeat of last year.

He mused: "It would be nice to get to at least the First Round but we're only in the Third Qualifying Round at the moment and Peterborough will be a difficult game.

"They'll fancy their chances. They're at home and it's an opportunity for them to get a scalp. A win would mean they're not so far from the First Round either.

"We were there last year and experienced it all, so we know what it means."

"If I remember correctly we played Stourbridge (in the Fourth Qualifying Round) and they have real FA Cup pedigree, so that was a great win for us.

"After that it was just a brilliant opportunity for us at Guiseley to be able to put the club out there and for the players to make a name for themselves.

"Hopefully we're still there after the weekend and we can repeat or go even better than last year."

He added: "We're all looking to be in the First Round, with the opportunities that brings. There are some big clubs in League One and League Two so we'd love to get there.

"Obviously you're not too far from the Third Round then either."

Peterborough will be just as determined to keep progressing though, and Bignot says his players are well prepared for the challenge that the Southern League Premier Central side will bring.

He said: "Our players won't be familiar with theirs but they are prepared for how they play so they're not an unknown quantity.

"They had a successful season last year in getting promotion and I've watched them myself this season. They've had had some good results.

"We've been there before as favourites but there's no added pressure, it's just on ourselves to carry on being positive in our play."

One huge positive for Guiseley this season has been the free-scoring Aaron Martin.

But he suffered a setback last weekend, receiving a red card for an alleged headbutt in his side's 3-1 defeat at Gloucester City in the Vanarama National League North.

Commenting on that, Bignot said: "Aaron's goal record speaks for itself. It's disappointing to lose him but we've got to deal with the consequences and believe in the squad we've got.

"We're still looking at the footage and it's a question of whether we appeal the decision or accept what I assume will be a three game ban."
