TORRENTIAL rain hit Yeadon-Guiseley Motor Club's eighth closed to club championship trial at Deer Park, Bingley, on Sunday.

There was no vestige of shelter for the eight sections, which were slippery for all classes. Just 35 competitors made the start.

The much publicised cycle race ran almost an hour behind schedule, so anywhere in the Wharfedale Valley was no go due to the road closure.

On the hard route Harry Hemingway apparently had the ability to walk on water and cruised through the sections for a mere two penalties.

The Class A teenager completed his third lap for two marks, in sections six and eight.

The boy also took his father Dan to the cleaners partly because the Hemmo team principal stopped on the first section.

Ben Ludgate hung in the claim Clubman A from Hemmo Junior, George Hemingway and Dave Petty, who was also minding sons Charlie and Oliver.

Stewart Oughton surfaced to win Clubman B on a clean sheet, leaving Vertigo duo Richard Crabtree and Karl Greaves to salvage the other places.

Only six small wheelers competed in the usual three classes. Alfie Carney won the hard route on a heady score while Poppy Fletcher and Alanna Eagleton occupied the middle route.

Koby Smith topped the easy route from Edward Kopasz and Edward Abram.

* The Nidderdale weather failed to affect the Wetherby Motor Club’s David Brown Charity Trial at Longside Farm on Sunday.

Despite the monsoon-like conditions, 41 competitors and ten observers braved horrendous conditions to stage the trial.

All proceeds will be donated to the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre. Twenty-two organisations and individuals donated to the event.

The woodland hillside course afforded little shelter for competitors and officials.

Guy Stones won the hard course class from Matthew Nicholson and Rob Bratley.

The top youth and overall hard course winner was Richard Pulman.

Errold Brown was the top Clubman, while young Jack Bennett claimed the Youth class. Jack was the only finisher.

* Airedale and Pennine Motor Club joined forces with Ilkley Motor Club at the Pateley Bridge Agricultural Show to marshal the spectator cars throughout the day.

As in recent years, each team had a bucket collection for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which yielded a staggering £1,250. The two car park counts totalled 1,100 vehicles.

The car park marshals were Helen and David Toft, Ian Daws, John Bell, Ron Kendall, Kevin Gooding, John Harris, Dave Lambourne and Stan Peel. The latter has been involved in the car park duties for 15 years. A total of 12 members were on duty.
