BEN Rhydding Golf team lost their penultimate league match away to Fulneck in the Bradford District Rabbits Golf Association League, leaving them in third place with Fulneck leapfrogging Ben Rhydding to go into first place thanks to their victory.

The Ben Rhydding team knew that only a 6-0 whitewash of Fulneck in the final return match would guarantee promotion and a favourable result in the East Bierley GC vs Bradford GC clash could secure promotion as champions to the division above.

The match teed off with the threat of thunder and lightning hanging heavy in the air.

Ben Rhydding got off to a good start, leading two of the three matches and drawing one after nine holes.

A tremendous birdie at the 13th saw Ben Rhydding’s top slot player, Luke Ryan, take the lead after an all or nothing drive leaving him right next to the green.

He never looked back after that and duly won the next two holes securing a three and two victory.

It was now down to the other two members of the team, Andy Williams and Adam Knight, to press home the advantages they had built up at the halfway stage. They both duly did what was required of them with Williams winning three and two and Knight winning four and three.

With promotion secured, a nervous wait ensued until all results were in. A 3-3 draw in the other match confirmed Ben Rhydding as their division champions.
