AS part of their 50th birthday celebrations, Airienteers went back in time on Sunday.

Competitors had to use Ilkley Moor map extracts from the 60s, 70s and 80s, with markers and punches from each decade.

For many this was an entirely new experience – courses had to be copied by hand and results pinned up on a ‘washing line’.

No computers or pre-marked maps were in evidence and the old maps were tricky to relate to the ground.

Hilary Allen from Addingham was one the Airienteers who marked her card at one of the historic controls.

Alongside the historic courses were some very challenging modern courses.

Best local results came from Joyce Marshall from Burley-in-Wharfedale, first W55; Shirley Wood from Addingham, first W60; and Frank Kew of Ilkley, first M70.

Ilkley’s Emily Gibbins won the orange course.

Matthew Hall narrowly beat his father on the brown course.

His dad, Adrian Hall, won M45 whilst Matthew came second in the M18 event.
