BEN Rhydding Ladies are top of the league after winning 5-1 in a derby clash with newcomers Leeds at the weekend.

The nerves and anticipation, which were only spurred on by the social media hype surrounding what was effectively a Leeds Beckett alumni game, were quickly put to bed as Kelly Baxter opened the scoring in the third minute from open play, quickly followed by Beth Cordukes finish which made it 2-0 in the ninth minute.

It was not long before Leeds hit back with a well finished reverse stick strike in the 16th minute to make the score 2-1 at half-time.

In the second half, the experience of the home side shone through, as Baxter and Cordukes completed their braces by way of a penalty stroke and open play goal, respectively, followed by Rafaela Brandao-Lee’s finish from a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the game.

The Ladies take on Loughborough at home at 1.30pm on Sunday.

Sheffield University Bankers beat Ben Rhydding Men 5-2 on Saturday.

It took just a minute for Bankers to drive through the middle to score their first goal. Soon after Bankers scored from their third consecutive penalty corner and poor marking led to a third after just 20 minutes.

Max Helme and Matty Bairstow linked up with George Gamble at the back post, and set up Will Musgrave to score a delightful goal for Rhydding. A penalty corner straight after half-time led to a second Rhydding goal with Musgrave despatching the corner.

Wil Jones suffered a broken metacarpal whilst saving a goal and will be out for six weeks.

Rhydding pressed for an equaliser which led to them conceding two more goals.

Ben Rhydding play Chapeltown at 3pm this Saturday.
