JACK Wood was on fire at Burnsall, as he finished second in the 10-mile road race there.

All of Ilkley Harriers' male athletes finished in the top 20 too, as the club recorded some excellent results.

Wood's time of 56 minutes and 22 seconds was nearly bested by Harriers team-mate Will Simons, who came fourth in 57.52, both impressive efforts in a tough, undulating race.

Ben Sheppard and Martin Archer finished fifth and ninth respectively. Sheppard recorded a time of one hour, one minute and 36 seconds, while Archer was not far behind in 1.04.05.

Jonathan Turner was the final Harrier in the top 20. He finished 17th overall in 1.08.00. Only 72 ran in total, compared to last year's 120, which is a shame for the organisers, who were perhaps struggling for numbers due to the Bank Holiday.

Of the 21 ladies who competed, Jean Sullivan led the Harriers back, coming 55th in 1.25.39. Sheena Pickersgill picked up first FV50 with her time of 1.31.54, while Hilda Coulsey made up the trio in 1.37.34.

The Classic Fell race at Burnsall is run over 2.4 kilometres, and Bingley Harriers' Victoria Wilkinson came ninth overall. In doing so, she set a new course record of 15.58, breaking a record held by Carol Greenwood since 1983.

Of the five competing Ilkley runners, Steven Gott finished 14th in 17.03, while Richard Joel could be pleased with coming 37th in 20.42.

Bernadette Raven was another success story at the event, coming a very close second in her age category.

Val Kerr undertook a 3.5-mile race at the Malham Show on Saturday, which featured more than 900ft of ascent. Having not competed in a while, she did well to achieve 48th place in 32.34.

The Podium Series of 5k races continued on Monday at Barrowford. Euan Brennan, 17, came sixth, recording 15.16. Sally Armitage's time of 20.14 and second F40 was also an impressive effort.

Rachel Carter took the opportunity to participate in a 5k run with the Zoetermeer road runners while on holiday in Holland.

She finished first lady and ninth overall in a time of 20.02. She would have dipped under the 20-minute mark but stopped to help a runner with a stitch.

l International man of mystery, Antonio Cardinale, cemented himself further into Otley AC folklore by completing the notoriously challenging 'Burnsall double'.

This involves running the undulating 10-mile road race at 2pm before starting the fell race at 4.30pm. A smiling Cardinale completed the double in style, even managing to change vests between races from his white road one to his black fell number.

The road race saw a welcome return for Richard Smith, and he eased himself into competitive action with a seventh-placed finish, completing the route in 1.02.

He was followed home by Graham Lake and Rogan Ashton, who both came in well under 1.10 on a tough course. Chris Chambers was next for Otley, then Sara Elliott, the sole female representative, Billy Raynor, David Cattenach and Cardinale.

Stephen Boddy and Tom Pomfrett were joined in the fell race by Cardinale and Lake, who was also doing the double. Boddy and Pomfrett were both thankful they lived to tell the tale after encountering the hair-raising Burnsall descent for the first time.

The fell race was won by Sam Tosh in 14.04 and the ladies' race was won by Bingley Harrier Victoria Wilkinson, who set a course record of 15.58 in the process.
