STEVE Turland and Will Buckton competed in the Sedbergh Hill Fell Race for Ilkley Harriers and the former had a great run to finish first in the V50 category.

Turland reached the finish in two hours, 55 minutes and 29 seconds which secured him 19th place overall. Meanwhile, Buckton set off well but navigational errors meant he took a longer route.

He was pleased to come 78th with a time of 3:59:07 though, as there were 18 competitors who were unable to complete the hilly 22.5-kilometre course, which occurred in poor visibility this year.

The other competing Harriers kept it short this week by taking part in a proliferation of 5k races. One of those was the seventh race of the Even Splits 5K Championship, which went ahead at the Brownlee Centre near Leeds.

The series consists of ten, monthly, 5k road races, which are chip-timed. There is lots of personal best potential and an opportunity to improve over the series.

David Westhead was the first Ilkley Harrier to finish, coming 20th in 18 minutes and 17 seconds, while Sally Armitage (20:47) was the first female to cross the line.

Junior runners Catherine Westhead (20:55) and Archie Budding (21:00) came 74th and 75th respectively, while Fiona Schneider recorded a personal best effort of 26:09.

There was a spread of Ilkley Harriers across the 5k Saturday morning Parkruns, with Rob Cunningham recording the fastest time, coming 21st in 19:02 at Clapham Common.

Helen Thurston also performed well at the Whinlatter Forest Parkrun, finishing seventh with a time of 23:43. It is a relatively new event and a little different from some of the local courses.

As well as showcasing the community spirit of Parkrun, the course boasts beautiful views of Derwentwater; weather permitting.

The course winds its way up through forest tracks and paths but it is not a good run for chasing a personal best as it is mostly uphill.

However, it is an enjoyable course and once competitors walk back down the hill from the finish, there is a great café to enjoy a well-earned refreshment.

Elsewhere, Mark Mon-Williams (20:17) and Jonathan Schneider (20:49) impressed in the Skipton Parkrun to come sixth and 10th respectively.

Dave Reynier (21:54) and Geoff Howard (21:58) both recorded good times to come 60th and 62nd at Harrogate, while Ilkley's sole competitor in the Bradford Parkrun was Will Worboys, who finished 127th in 27:01.
