FIRST there was the Tour de France -- then came the Tour de Riddlesden!

The village’s three churches hosted a special event last Saturday for people suffering withdrawal symptoms after the Grand Depart.

Cyclists took to the streets and towpath through Riddlesden on a range of rides.

Pat Fenton, one of the organisers, said: “It was a relaxed, informal day with a wonderfully friendly atmosphere.

“All ages, from babies to 90 year-olds got out and about in Riddlesden and enjoyed the sunshine and activities.”

Hardy cyclists cyclists took part in an 8km Ultimate Challenge up to Keighley Gate and back again. Others preferred to take part in a 3km fun ride.

The day started with a baton relay, which visited three churches – St Mary’s, Ilkley Road Methodist and the United Reformed.

A "balloon baton" was taken by the Lofthouse family in a canoe along the Leeds Liverpool canal, passed to cyclists, the Rev Mike Cansdale and his children Esther, Zac and Josh, and Laura Pennie.

They cycled the top of Riddlesden and handed the baton to runner Cath Robb , who took it back to the starting point at Bar Lane.
