WHAT would have been Otley’s very first Armed Forces Day has been cancelled.

The event, due to take place on Sunday, July 5, is the latest to be called off due to the restrictions that have been brought in to fight the spread of COVID-19.

Organisers Otley Armed Forces Day Committee, however, are vowing to now launch it in 2021 instead.

Honorary President and Town Mayor Councillor Peter Jackson said: “In line with government guidance around managing the impact of COVID-19 we have taken the very difficult but responsible decision to cancel the Otley Armed Forces Day events that were due to take place on July 5.

“Please accept our sincere apologies but we are sure you will all appreciate that it would be an unnecessary risk to the health and wellbeing of our Armed Forces, veterans, cadets, exhibitors and the wider community for these events to go ahead.

“Our dedicated committee will now be looking forward to hosting the very first Otley Armed Forces Day event in 2021. We would like to thank all the people who have supported us and hope you continue to do so.” The day would have involved a parade, military band performances, stalls and more.
