BRADFORD Grammar School has announced its support of the Ilkley Carnival ‘TV-themed’ creative competition.

The school is offering the cover competition winner – and their classmates – a creative workshop utilising the school’s extensive art facilities.

Known for its prestigious alumni – including the world-renowned Bradford artist, David Hockney – the school’s sponsorship of the Carnival’s annual arts competition adds further value to the winner’s prize of having their artwork printed on the cover of the event’s official programme, which is handed out before and on carnival day, Monday, May 7.

Committee member Karen Hitchin, said: “The cover competition is a real highlight of the carnival calendar as it encourages local children to bring our theme to life through their fantastic art work. To have this celebrated and supported by Bradford Grammar School is absolutely fantastic and we’re thrilled that the winning child, and their classmates, will have the opportunity to flex their creative muscles even further in a specially-created BGS art work shop. You never know, we may even inspire the next budding Hockney – all through Ilkley Carnival!”

There are three entry categories for the competition; ages 5-8, 9-11 and 12-16. The committee will be joined by a Bradford Grammar School representative and a member of the Bettys Café Tea rooms team, which is supplying goodie bags for all winners, to choose the category winners and the overall winner on Thursday, March 15. All winners will receive their artwork framed by Ilkley’s Weaverbird Workshop and be invited onto the stage on carnival day to collect their prizes.

Josie Barraclough, Bradford Grammar School’s Head of Arts, said: “It is our ethos to work with schools throughout the district to share experiences, learn from each other and support the many communities that our pupils travel to us from. Ilkley Carnival has a fantastic reputation as an engaging local event which is loved by families from inside and outside of the area and we are delighted to be working with the committee to encourage cover competition entries, to see the talented artwork that is produced and to host a very special arts workshop for the winning child and his or her classmates.”

She added: “Good luck to Ilkley’s school children - there’s plenty of time left to really get creative and wow us with some fantastic TV-themed artwork!”

All entries must be received by Wednesday, March 14 and delivered in an envelope clearly marked ‘Ilkley Carnival Cover Competition’ to Approach PR, 32-34 The Grove, Ilkley, LS29 9EE.

Please ensure that each child’s name, age, entry category and school is clearly written on the back of each entry.
