A BIKE libraries scheme is encouraging Wharfedale residents to donate their unwanted bicycles.

Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries aims to give every child in Yorkshire access to a bike, for free, via 47 'libraries' around the region.

The scheme relies on donated bicycles which are collected from 62 sites across the county and then inspected and repaired before being put into use.

Thousands have already been given but the organisers of the project - which has seen Welcome to Yorkshire, Cycle Yorkshire and Yorkshire Bank team up - hope to receive a Christmas boost as people receive new bikes.

Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, Sir Gary Verity, said: "So far over 5,500 bikes have been donated which is incredible - thank you to everyone who has got involved.

"I’m sure there will be lots of lucky children finding a new bike under the Christmas tree this year.

"Don’t let your old bike go to waste - let someone new love your old bike!"
