An MP has proved he is putting his back into life at Westminster by anchoring his team to victory in a tug of war.

Keighley MP Kris Hopkins joined forces with colleagues from all parties, left, to help the House of Commons to a win against a team from the House of Lords in Macmillan Cancer Support’s 25th annual Parliamentary Tug of War.

The event raised more than £100,000 for Macmillan to support people affected by cancer and means more than £3.5 million has been contributed since the first contest in 1987.

“Macmillan’s Parliamentary Tug of War has, for many years, enabled politicians of all persuasions to pull together in aid of a great cause,” Mr Hopkins said.

“The money raised will enable Macmillan to support many of the two million people in this country currently living with cancer. Given that the House of Lords team didn’t have a vote between them, the Commons victory was, in my view, one for the people and certainly the right outcome for democracy.”

The Parliamentary match is the highlight of a line-up featuring tug of wars between rival city firms, the military versus emergency services and, for the first time this year, a media contest between Westminster journalists and bloggers.
