There was a festival atmosphere out on Ilkley Moor as hundreds of singers belted out Yorkshire anthem On Ilkla Moor Baht 'At on Saturday.

The volunteers gathered at the famous Cow And Calf Rocks and were filmed for a music video to accompany a reworked version of the song, which features Lesley Garrett, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Fame Academy’s Alistair Griffin and a rap from actor Brian Blessed.

Eliot Kennedy, a producer on the X Factor and the man behind the new arrangement, was enjoying the atmosphere.

He said: “It’s amazing, I’m blown away with how many people are here, streaming down the moor. It looks fantastic and it’s going to look great on film. I think everyone’s having a great time, it’s got a festival feel to it – it’s magnificent.”

A Yorkshire man himself, Mr Kennedy said the event was a celebration for Yorkshire folk. “When I go away abroad and say I’m from Yorkshire everybody knows where it is,” he said. “It’s a great thing for us to celebrate where we’re from.”

Rhiannon Gayle, of the Rock Up and Sing choir, whose members feature on the recording, said : “It’s got a very good end product but in between everybody is having a ball.”

Dee Marshall, head of communications at Welcome To Yorkshire, which organised the production to promote the region after claims the classic ode to Ilkley was dying out, said she was delighted by the numbers who took part. She said: “It’s been good, we’re really pleased about the support. When we heard the song was dying out we thought let’s get behind this. It’s a very quirky way to promote Yorkshire. It’s things like this that will grab people’s attention.”

Proceeds from the song sales will go to the Yorkshire Regiment and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

People of all ages from across Yorkshire were celebrating their region and getting involved with the production.

They included Sam Ford, 12, who said: “I’m from Ilkley and I love Ilkley. I wanted to show everyone how great it is.”

The song will be released for download at a date yet to be announced.
